Welcome to our Easter SFH6 newsletter

This has been a very short half term and of course we are looking forward with great excitement to moving into the new building at Sydenham after the holidays. Please see below for details of the first week back and click here to read an important letter about the new building from Ms Unsted. We are all going to feel incredibly proud to work and learn in this fabulous new building and look forward to welcoming students there on 16th April.

As the exam season is nearly upon us students are focusing on careful revision and exam preparation and many students and staff will be in the sixth form (at Forest Hill) over Easter taking part in a range of extra revision classes (details on the website). Students have also found time to take part in a range of enrichment activities both in school and beyond and staff have been busy interviewing nearly 500 prospective Year 11 students who are keen to join SFH6 in September.

UCAS
Our Year 13 students are in the final stage of the University application process – Universities have usually made all their offers by 31st March and students will need to reply to their offers by 7th May.

Year 12 students will start their UCAS preparation programme after the Easter Holidays although some have already taken opportunities to apply for and attend a range of taster courses and to apply for weekend and summer courses. The sixth form will always text students about these opportunities so please pay close attention to these texts and then see the sixth form admin team for more information about any that interest you. The details of the UCAS and Progression programme will be sent home shortly and includes opportunities to network with student university ambassadors, attend personal statement writing workshops, find out about student finance, visit a campus university and attend a large UCAS fair at Goldsmiths College. On 16th June we will be holding our Parents UCAS Evening which should be a really informative and useful evening.
Attendance:

We would like to remind students that we expect everyone to maintain a minimum of 95% attendance to lessons. Research shows that students with excellent attendance usually achieve at least one grade higher than other students in their exams. We are extremely impressed by the large number of students who have maintained a 100% attendance record since September, in fact too many to list here! .
If students do have to be absent from school please remember that a note or a phone call from parents is needed to authorize the absence. Contact details for 6th form reception at each school are listed below.

In the summer term lessons will continue as timetabled up to the final exams for each subject.  Students are expected to attend these lessons unless they have an examination on that day or the following day.  Level 3 BTEC courses, Level 2 courses and Applied Media Production A level will continue until the date specified by the subject leader.

Revision Tips:

As we get very close to the AS and A2 examinations (3 or 4 weeks to some!) students need to make sure that they are putting their revision plans into action. Building on the feedback from teachers and the Mock Exam results, students should be using their time to revise thoroughly and to practice exam questions. Revision needs to be active and techniques such as flash cards and the Cornell method have been recommended to students. To check that revision is working students should always ask themselves; ‘Do I know it?’, ‘How do I know that I know it?’

Oxford and Cambridge University Visits:
As part of our progression programme two groups of students have taken part in the Lewisham University Challenge programme and visited both Oxford and Cambridge universities. Below are some accounts from the students

Today was a fantastic opportunity to learn all about Cambridge and to hear from past students. I really enjoyed the experience and gained a huge amount from being able to ask questions. I was able to gain a real insight into Cambridge life and I feel better prepared for the application process.

These trips were great opportunities for me to experience the universities and the towns. The activities were also really insightful into the way an Oxbridge student learns and the lectures showed me how different the teaching environment is in a university. I am very glad I was invited to these trips and will definitely consider applying next year.

The trip was very informative, giving us a unique insight into Oxbridge life. We were privileged to experience lecture style sessions and personalised tours. The university application session provided us with invaluable advice for the future

The Cambridge trip was a very pleasant experience. I've learnt a lot about applications, courses, college activities and facilities. In comparison to Oxford I preferred how close the different colleges and other facilities are to each other.

AS Spanish Work Experience - A letter from Spain (via facebook)

We started our journey in Madrid. Students had a guided tour of the city learning about the capital's history. In the evening we shared tapas in a Galician restaurant. The next day we caught a coach to Salamanca. Students were met by their host families at the bus station. They were given maps of the city and were given an orientation task to find their work placements. On Monday, all students started their work placements consisting of cafes, restaurants, nurseries, a gym, a chocolate shop and a Business School. Students have had to get used to Spanish working hours. Working in the morning, having a 3 hour break for a 'siesta' in the afternoon and returning to work in the afternoon-evening. It has been hard work!

During their breaks in the afternoon, students have explored the city visiting the cathedral and tower and eating in authentic Spanish restaurants. On one evening, students went to see a Spanish film at the cinema with no subtitles. In the evening we enjoyed a 'ruta de tapas' where students followed a route of 'tapas restaurants' trying dishes from each restaurant and then moving on.

The host families were incredibly impressed by all our Year 12 students - excellent international ambassadors for SFH6. Well Done!


AS Trip to Berlin (Year 12 and Year 10) by Jack Phillips
In March we travelled by plane from London Gatwick to Berlin Schoenefeld and then took the train and tram to our hotel.
The hotel we were staying in was called Hotel Transit Loft and it was a cosy and welcoming place. The rooms were lovely and tidy. We dropped our bags off and headed for Alexanderplatz.
Alexanderplatz was a busy and vibrant place. This was home to the famous TV tower otherwise known as the Fernsehturm.
Mr Cowley took us on a wonderful historical tour of Berlin which was packed with fantastic and interesting information. We visited the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg gate.
The following day, Friday, we visited a German secondary school, where we got to interact with the ever so friendly students there and got to have a tour of the school. Following this visit we all joined the other school for a brilliant few games of bowling.
Then on the evening of the same day, we went up the Fernsehturm. It was incredible to see the vibrant city of Berlin at night from a bird’s eye view at a height of 368m.
The next day we travelled by train to the city of Potsdam, just outside Berlin. We were given a fantastically detailed tour of Potsdam and the stunning palaces that it has to offer. These palaces used to be home to famous Prussian kings. We spent the whole day in Potsdam and then in the evening we went to the cinema in Berlin to watch the film based on Martin Luther King, the film was called 'Selma', a film that many of us would highly recommend due to its moving nature.
On the final day, Sunday, we visited the Berlin Wall that partially ran alongside the river Spree. We observed the extravagant paintings on the wall. We then travelled to the German parliament building, The Reichstag. We were given an impressive guided tour of the building, finishing with a spectacular view of the surrounding area from the glass dome at the top of the building.
Overall the trip was a fantastic, enjoyable and informative success. We didn’t want to leave and would definitely go back there again.
The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

Our EPQ students presented their projects to an audience on 18th March. To complete the project (which is worth half an A level) students have had to develop a research question and carry out independent research to write a 5000 word report. Students have attended regular tutorials in school to discuss their progress and on Wednesday 18th March I was incredibly impressed by the quality of their presentations and by the enormous amount of learning that students showed us. Students projects covered a very wide range of subjects including 'Gender Equality in music composition', 'Is it possible to eradicate Malaria', ' A field study of Fossorial reptiles in Malaysia', 'The media and football', 'The political control of science' and 'The truth about hypnosis', 'Antibiotic Resistance'. Students have learnt a great deal from the project, especially time management and research skills and we are confident that these skills will be of great benefit to the students as they move on to university next year. We will be launching the EPQ with Year 12 students later in the summer term so look out for information after May half term.
